Player of the Year

Belvoir Park

What a wonderful welcome we received in Belvoir Park Golf Club for our recent society outing. Very kindly sponsored by first time sponsor Phil Scallan & Stoneseal, the outing proved to be a great day out for us all. Some 40 golfers made the journey to Belfast to play in this beautiful top-ten parkland golf course in Northern Ireland. The promised complimentary Ulster Fry did not disappoint, as we were treated to a delicious buffet breakfast before teeing it up.

Murcia, Spain

Our long-awaited trip to Spain was another resounding success for the society. Despite getting rained off our first day’s golf at La Manga, the weather improved dramatically and we had four days of sunshine in the mid to high 20’s and with La Manga obligingly rearranging our entire field of 40 golfers to the Sunday instead, at no cost to the society, everyone got to play all the golf they had planned. With La Manga rained off on the Thursday we moved the main event singles, kindly sponsored by Jack McHugh and Alucraft, to Friday’s Lo Romero.

CCGS Trip to Murcia - Winners

Lo Romero proved to be a fine track and was presented in excellent condition. Congratulations to Declan Murphy who shot a great winning score of 38 points, beating Sean Reid into second place on a countback, with Conor Dalglish in third place with 37 points. The 18th at Lo Romero has an intimidating island green waiting for your final approach shot. We offered a prize to those who successfully beat The Risk & Reward challenge, hitting the green in regulation appropriate to their handicap. Just 4 out of the 40 golfers managed to do so. Well done to all, full results as follows:

1st – Declan Murphy (12) 38pts C/B

2nd – Sean Reid (14) 38pts

CCGS Trip to Murcia - Winners 2

Well done to all. La Serena was carefully selected as they were able to provide us with showering facilities after golf. With impeccable timing we drove into a torrential downpour and thunderstorm on our way to the airport, but managed to get the bus unloaded safely and mostly dry.

A special mention also to our touring pro Gary McGrane. Gary jumped in at the last minute and what a great addition to the trip he proved to be. I’m sure any of you who had 5 or 10 minute session with Gary before your round will agree that he has a lot to offer. Thanks Gary and good luck with your upcoming Alps Tour Q-School!

Hotel 525 was perfect for the society, ideally situated in a commercial strip with a great selection of bars and restaurants. On behalf of the Captain and the committee, I would like to thank the members on making the trip such a resounding success and to acknowledge with gratitude all the positive comments received by the committee. We had plenty of late nights, wining and dining and it was fantastic to note that not a single player missed a tee-time on any of the days. The camaraderie on these trips is fantastic and it was mentioned to me that members had made new friends and strengthened old friendships.

For those of you who couldn’t make it this year, please put the 4th Oct 2023 in your diary now, as next year’s venue and courses look likely to be a repeat success.
