Captain’s Day at The Royal Dublin Golf Club was another outstanding success for the society. Captain Vincent and Vice-Captain Stephen, with plenty of committee help, are to be congratulated on the detailed organisation and smooth running of the day. We had 68 golfers teeing it up on an otherwise very busy day in the club and thanks to our starter Bryan and RD management, everything ran very smoothly. The links were in magnificent condition with the greens rolling beautifully. Catering at RD is to be complimented for looking after our members from early morning with breakfast and lunch as required, but particularly for the wonderful 3-course meal – the food and service were absolutely delicious.
A pat on the back for myself – plenty of luck mixed in with some golf and managed to produce 41 points to take the much-coveted Captain’s Cup of 2022 and a fabulous Captain’s Prize. Congratulations to Cian Bennis in 2nd place beating Michael Brennan into third place on a countback with 38 points each. Very well done to all the prize winners and the full results are as follows:

We were honoured to have Captain Brendan O’Malley of RDGC as our guest, who spoke very kindly of our society and its long connections with the golf club. We were also delighted to have Enda O’Meara and Aidan Crowe from Clontarf Castle as our guests and Enda also spoke highly of the society and its founding members. After our lovely meal and prize giving we retired to the Christy O’Connor room where we were wonderfully entertained by The Wobblies, a great band who managed to cajole many of our members into doing their party piece with the backing of the band.
In the best traditions of the society in playing new and interesting courses, our next trip takes us north to the beautiful Belvoir Park Golf Club in Belfast on 9 September 2022. Ranked in the top ten courses in Northern Ireland, the outing to this Harry Colt-designed course will be kindly sponsored by first-time sponsor Phil Scallan & Stoneseal. With tee times from 11.30am, it’s a handy drive on new roads to the club that is on the south side of Belfast.
Sign on night is this coming Thursday 1 September in The Indigo Lounge in Clontarf Castle at 8.00pm. Through great connections in the club, we can offer this outing at great value for €55.00, which includes your charity donation, two’s competition entries and a fabulous Ulster Fry! Remember, this is the discounted price for those who enter on sign-on night and the best way to get the tee-time you prefer is to be at sign-on yourself.
The prize giving will be 30 minutes after the last group finish, so it would be worth arranging a nominated driver for the return.
Here are the latest standings after Royal Dublin, showing the best 5 scores out of 6 played.
Conor Dalglish – 163pts
Sean Reid – 162pts
Ian Mackey – 158pts
Niall O’Reilly – 153pts
Mick O’Flynn – 152pts
Brendan Fagan – 152pts
Kevin Maher – 150pts
I’m sure there’ll be a few changes before our final outing in The Links.
Matchplays are getting down to the nitty-gritty stages with some players into the semi-finals. Make sure you keep Mick Kenny (087 2438502) advised of any results.
