Kieran Montgomery wins the Strokeplay Championship

For our 35th Anniversary of the founding of this great golf society, we returned to where it all began, Clontarf Golf Club, for the Stock Design & Brendan Fagan sponsored strokeplay championship.  Clontarf Golf Club were very accommodating on a busy day.  The course was in beautiful condition and the weather held out for most of us.  Their catering staff laid on a gorgeous BBQ for all 59 golfers who turned out to play.

Congratulations to Kieran Montgomery who wins the Annual Strokeplay Cup & Gold Medal with a tremendous score of 65 nett.  Kieran spoke highly of the society and was genuinely delighted as a links golfer to shoot the low score in a parkland course.  Kevin Maher took the silver medal with a score of 68 nett and the bronze went to Tony Buckley with a very tidy 71 nett.  Full results as follows:

A great souvenir from our 35th Anniversary – a good looking bunch of young lads!

Our sponsor, Brendan Fagan of Stock Design, touched on his family connection with Clontarf Golf Club when he spoke at the presentation.  Brendan has very kindly sent me the following to share with you.

Words from Brendan “Following our very successful outing to Clontarf Golf Club on Friday, and in my ‘few words’, I mentioned my Grandfather, Christopher Fagan, was the Greenkeeper at Clontarf, from 1915 to 1919. My father, Patrick Fagan, was born from a house, which was provided by the Club, somewhere off the second hole.

From 1919, after he left Clontarf, he was the Greenkeeper at Howth Golf Club until 1930, where in 1927, he ‘set out’ the back nine with the famous golf designer of his time, J H Braid, who won 5 Open Championships.

We also held a sweep for The Open for all golfers who played at Clontarf.  Congratulations to Seán Hogan who was lucky to get Brian Harman, who was the leading golfer after round two at The Open.

Captain Stephen Mooney’s Day

A regular return to The Royal Dublin Golf Club lived up to expectations for all of us.  The course was in magnificent condition, both fairways and greens were as good as ever and the rough was punishing when your ball went astray.  Staff were fantastic throughout the day from the pro shop, to the burger after the 9th, to the delicious three-course meal in the dining room, and of course a few late drinks and music by Don ‘til the wee hours.  We were delighted to welcome Captain John Pardy of the Royal Dublin Golf Club as our guest for dinner who spoke kindly of our society and it’s long links with the golf club.

Congratulations go to George Corrigan who wins the Captain’s Prize with a wonderful score of 35 points.  Second place goes to Gerry Tobin, also shooting a great score of 35 points.  Full results as follows:

Mount Juliet

This Saturday we are off to Mount Juliet once again, for our Stoneseal & Phil Scallan sponsored outing.  The weather looks to be fantastic so be sure to bring the sun cream!  The time sheet is available to view on the website.  Be sure to check in with your starter Bryan 15 minutes before your allocated slot.  Full catering is available before and after golf and with a bit of luck we might be able to hold the presentation al fresco.

Matchplays

Both competitions have been moving along reasonably well, with the fourball semi-finalists ready to do battle and the singles at the quarter final stage.  4th October is the next deadline and with the away trip to Spain coming up make sure you get your match organised promptly.
