Results & outing report from Donabate

I think the 47 members who ventured out on a fine sunny day in north Dublin were surprised at the stern test of golf presented by Donabate, Captain Derek Erskines home club. The greens were in magnificent condition with some awkward pin positions to rumble all but the most confident putters. I heard one member remark that the fairways were like ‘carpet’. Combined with the weather, fantastic course presentation, the friendly club atmosphere & some competitive golf; Donabate proved to be a terrific outing.

Straight & accurate shots were the order of the day & Andy Flynn emerged triumphant from the trees with a great score of 39 points.  Following his runner up spot at lahinch, Gay Pollard was again pipped at the post in his efforts to win the top prize; just losing out to Andy on countback. Stephen Mooney was delighted with a run to second runner up with a score of 35 points. As a measure of the test of golf we only had a single 2, scored by Michael Norton on the 12th hole. In the ‘Nearest the Pin Competition’ Mick Sludds was the sharp shooter.

Following the golf & some fine food our Captain Derek invited his guest, Pat McNeill, Donabates Club Captain, to address the society. Pat expressed his delight in welcoming CCGS to Donabate. Unfortunately, our sponsor Bob Fagan (Ailesbury & Ashbury Retirement Homes) was away & unable to make the outing; however, his son James was a more than able representative for him, presenting a fantastic array Wines. We thank him sincerely for his support.

In the Player of the Year Andy Flynn’s win in Donabate consolodates his position at the top of the leader board with 136 points. With 5 events completed Andy has a 12 point margin over second placed Louis O’Carroll (124 points) with Michael Sludds a further 5 points bedhind on 119.
