November/December Newsletter

Dear President- Elect Trump.

On behalf of our members I would like to congratulate you on being able to move out of that hotel and into a nice house. By sheer coincidence we have a lot of families living in Dublin who would love to be able to do the same.

I am truly sorry that some of our politicians were not very nice to you when you dropped by to visit us last year in your big jet.The one with your name on it, classy looking job.
I just can’t wait to see the new paint job you have planned for Air Force 1.
Don’t quote me on this but I think the house has to stay white.

I just wanted to tell you that most of us would have voted for you only we don’t have a vote in the US. Anyway I guess you already knew that.

I don’t suppose there is any chance you could do us a deal to play your nice course at Doonbeg County Clare for our 30th. Anniversary year in 2018 ? By the way isn’t it great that the First Lady will also be celebrating her 30th.birthday around the same time.

It would be appreciated if we could have our outing before you start to build that wall to keep out the Atlantic, and everyone else who has ticked you off.

Anyway I will get our course liaison officer to send you a few dates, and you can check the availability. Please try to keep the green-fee around €50 if at all possible.

You are more than welcome to drop in and join us for a game if you are in the area and not to busy building that other wall around Mexico, or doing other important Presidential stuff.

Yours sincerely.

Hon. sec. / Diplomatic affairs

Well I think that’s one course in the bag for 2018. I will leave the others for Tony Buckley to sort out.
MEANWHILE BACK TO REALITY

What a great year the society has experienced. Great courses, weather and companionship has made 2016 a year to remember.

Regrettably we lost one of the great characters of the society to cancer. Grellan Murray passed away in October and he will be greatly missed by all of the members. He was always good company both on and off the golf course.
Thankfully our brand new gallery is full of great photos of both Grellan and of our other members who are no longer with us. May they rest in peace.

CAPTAIN JOE O’FLAHERTY

Congratulations to Captain Joe O’Flaherty who steered the society through a hugely successful season and was hands on throughout. Unfortunately, Joe has decided to depart the committee following the AGM. We are indebted to him for his input into making 2016 a year to remember. He can now focus on winning a few prizes !

PORTMARNOCK LINKS

The finale of the year kicked off with a full time-sheet at the Portmarnock Links. Sponsored by Conor Gallagher and Gallagher Quigley Estates. We are extremely grateful to Conor and his company for their continued support to the society.

THE WINNERS.
After hitting the bar plus one or two others in Mallorca, David Cassidy (GD) firmly put his name on the First prize at Portmarnock. He just managed by a single point to stop Ian Mackey from putting his name on two titles in the same day. Ian I have no doubt was still smiling having walked away with the Jack Guirke Memorial Trophy and a well earned second at Portmarnock.

Winner David Cassidy (GD) 35 points
Second Ian Mackey 34 points
Third Paul Webb 34 points

Class 1 Mick Chambers 33 points
Class 2 Mick Slein 33 points
Class 3 Larry Gordon 31 points

THE SOCIAL NIGHT

Unfortunately I missed it this year but by all accounts it was a great night enjoyed by all. The icing on the cake being a little rugby match that seemingly set the place alight.

Our thanks to Clontarf Castle for their ongoing generosity to the Society.

CONGRATULATIONS

On behalf of all of our members I would like to congratulate fellow member Peter Finnegan who has been named as Captain-Elect at Royal Dublin Golf Club for 2017. We wish you every success and best wishes in your year of Captaincy.

Our sincere thanks to all of our sponsors for the support during this year and for the past 28 years. The society could not exist without your generosity.
