Already in the preliminary round of the Singles Matchplay Championship, there have been a couple of upsets. Tadgh O’Meara had a great win over fellow Royal Dublin member and Barton Cup player Conor Dalglish. Stephen Tucker brought last year’s 4-ball Champion Jim Stanley to his home club, Beaverstown, using his home advantage well to win the match on 18. Barry Murray invited Malachy Menton to his home club, Correstown. The match was played in beautiful sunshine and the result was decided by the last putt on the 18th green, a putt that made Malachy a very happy man indeed. Michael Slein travelled to Larry Gordon’s beloved Sutton, and probally wished for home advantage, after an enjoyable evening’s golf Larry emerged the victor. The reigning Singles Champion Liam Mullaney sailed swiftly through with a walkover into the next round.
Remember guys – the next round in the singles must be played within four weeks, that’s the date of the Killeen Castle outing, 18th May, so don’t leave it to the last minute.
