Killeen Castle Outing Report

Killeen Castle is what you might describe as a classy joint. The club still provides a very high quality service in house and an excellent test of golf on the Solheim Cup course – despite the current climate that has adversely effected so many clubs around the country. They are to be complimented on the manner in which the entire operation is presented. It is also nice to note that the greens staff have a wicked sense of humour which was pretty obvious in their choice of pin positions on the day.To say they were put in impossible positions would not be understating it. The most heard comment in the clubhouse after the game was “…and how many greens did you three putt to-day?”. The guys that four putted were keeping it to themselves. Wonder what the Ladies who participated in the Solheim Cup were thinking? Probably thought it was a very user friendly course particularly from the back stakes.

– Winner Michael Connolly with Killeen Sponsor Ed Cronnelly of Bidcon Construction

One man who defied the odds and thought it was all over when he scratched the 17th was Captain Michael Connolly who returned a very respectable 36 points to take first prize. Tadgh O’Meara and Myki Heather on 35 points won second and third prizes. Michael Sludds won class one with a score of 34 points and classes two and three were won with 32 points by Ray Hughes and Barry Murray respectively. The front nine went to Hugh Ward on 17 points and Sean Furlong collected the back nine with 18 points. Nearest the pin went to Grellan Murray who was a good fifteen feet from the cup. Wonder how many putts he took?

Our thanks to Ed Cronnelly and Bidcon Construction who were responsible for the excellent wines that Michael Connolly and the other worthy winners took home after a hard day away from the office.
