If Carlsberg did Society Outings

For those of you who were on our jolly to Ballyliffin won’t need to read this to understand what an outstanding 36 hours we had in the wee north west. Superlatives one might use are phenomenal , fabulous  and special and that’s not just the referendum results ! 42 enthusiastic amateurs teed it up on the Glashedy links on Friday afternoon, most were left exhilarated but deflated after playing 18 of the most majestic golf holes on the planet. The wind was testing, fairways were fiery, bunkers were graveyards and greens were slick. Bryan’s time sheet went like clockwork and all enjoyed a truly wonderful day.

See results below, but just in case he hasn’t mentioned it to you , Emmet came out of a 15 year hibernation to win with a tremendous 36 pts. Nearest the pin was won by David Cassidy SC on the spectacular 7th, a hole equal in length and height of 180 yards, David played an 8 iron which sailed and dropped to an impressive 112 inches. As you know our two David Cassidy’s are identified in the society by their Golf Club initials SC being South County and RD needing no explanation, David SC has recently moved clubs and has joined Glen Of The Downs and he has made it known from here in, he would like to be identified as David Cassidy GOD !

Shay & johns prizes were presented after dinner in the Strand hotel , where Emmet hushed all hecklers by reminding them, speaking is for winners only ! Tony Casey & Andy Flynn accepted gracefully without retort .

Captain Tony entertained the revellers with the usual mix of charm and wit, smiling brightly for Phils snapshots , Drinks we’re had in the bar until the early hours with many first time travellers enjoying the craic with seasoned pros, it was great to have some of our younger members along, the future is bright for our society. Photos are on our web site which capture the fun had by all.

Saturday was a better ball fourball on the equally impressive old course, a totally different layout, with every fairway sculpted by humps, bumps and drumlins, a real old fashioned traditional seaside links in fabulous condition. In the club house after their game, Mick Kenny and Tadgh O Meara accepted congratulations for an impressive 44 pts including Tadgh’s, holed 7 iron approach for eagle on the par 5, fourth. With all anxious to hit the road, scores were recorded by text and results only known late Saturday night, as happens an another equally impressive 44 was scored and winners on a count back were Kevin Maher and Paul Traynor, fantastic golf well done to all. Sweep prizes will be presented at Killeen Castle.

Spare a thought for Mantan who had to offer apologies to the group in front for driving the green whilst they were approaching the 336 yard par 4, 10th hole, unfortunately the old saying you drive for show and putt for dough came into play as only one point was recorded on Mantan & Marks card !
