June 2020 Newsletter

Dear Member,

Following on from the Captain’s letter, on behalf of myself and the committee, we hope everyone is keeping well and starting to enjoy the easing of restrictions and in particular, getting out to play some casual golf!

By this time I should have been reporting to you on a spectacular weekend away to Doonbeg & Dromoland, telling you about the beautiful courses and wonderful scores by the man in form, whoever that might have been. We’ll just have to hold that thought until next year.

Next up was to have been Killeen Castle followed by Belvoir Park in August and as you are aware, these have been officially cancelled.

As mentioned by Captain Tony, Friday 11th September was to have been our Captain’s Day in St. Anne’s and we are hoping to use this booking for an informal outing for some casual golf and maybe a pint and bite to eat, all subject to the guidelines of the day obviously. We’ll be in touch in August to finalise this and arrange a timesheet.

Our trip to Murcia from 30th September to 4th October may well be a possibility as an unofficial away trip and is still under discussion. Spain will most likely be open for business but we will need to see what the Irish government overseas travel guidelines are closer to the time. Having to self-isolate for 14 days on return would obviously put most of us off. I’ll keep you posted with any updates on this one.

The committee are delighted that Tony and Vinny have agreed to stay on as Captain and Vice for 2021. Furthermore, it is our intention to hit the reset button come January 2021. Your subscriptions will go forward for next year and Tony Buckley is working away trying to rebook the same venues for the year – let’s hope he can arrange the same sensational line-up! Obviously, our matchplay competitions cannot proceed this year and the existing draws will apply next year.

Finally, you will recall I wrote to you about one of our members, Chris Cadwell, carrying out an incredible double marathon walk in 1 day for the Darkness into Light charity. The response from the members was fantastic and here’s a few words from Chris:

“Thank you to all the members of CCGS for your extremely generous donations and support of my charity event last month in aid of Darkness Into Light. On May 9th I completed 85km (two marathons back to back) for Pieta House, as this was the original date for the DIL fundraiser, which had to be postponed due to Covid-19. I set off at 4:30am to catch the sunrise in Sandymount around 5:30am then continued on my way, with a few brief stoppages throughout the day, until I finally hit the 85km (113,000 steps approx) around 7:30pm later that evening. It was great to see a few of you on the day as I did my loops of the 5km radius, as well as the numerous messages of support & donations that filtered through also. This made the event that little bit “easier” as the support helped motivate me to put the head down and head for the finish line. In the end I raised just over €20,000 for Pieta House, which was way above and beyond anything I had initially anticipated, the support was overwhelming and made it all the more worthwhile. The feet bared the brunt of the distance, but luckily I didn’t miss any golf as the government closed our beloved golfing establishments. Hope you’re all enjoying your return to play and look forward to catching up with you all once it is safe to do so! Chris”

Very well done Chris!
