Tony Buckley wins the CCGS Northwest Championship

What an incredibly memorable trip we’ve had to The Rosapenna Hotel & Golf Resort. The Gallagher Quigley sponsored outing to this haven for golfers in the town of Downings, in Northern Donegal was only our second ever two-day championship. We were drenched in sunshine for the weekend with temperatures in the high teens. The hotel was luxurious and the staff superb and dining in the Vardon restaurant was excellent.

Both the Tom Morris Links & the Sandy Hills Links were in mint condition throughout and gave our members a welcome challenge. As the song goes “there are people dreaming of the Hills of Donegal”, so too is Tony Buckley, having produced two fantastic rounds of golf, 42 points on Tom Morris and an equally impressive 38 points on the championship Sandy Hills course. Congratulations to you Tony and, of course, to our very popular runner-up, Brendan Fagan who shot the round of the day in Sandy Hills to bring his total to 70 points, and also to Ian Mackey in third place just one point back on a two-round total of 69. Joe Enright masters the wind at Malahide

Another fantastic outing for the society was had at our long overdue return to Malahide Golf Club. Despite the worrying forecast, we managed to get around without any significant rain and thoroughly enjoyed the Phelan Caswell Insurances & Mark Phelan sponsored outing. Many members availed of the fine hospitality available at the club before and after golf. The course was presented in excellent condition, particularly the green surfaces which were absolutely pristine.

The wind blew hard but it didn’t seem to bother Joe Enright who managed to stand tall and produce a fabulous score of 38 points – outright winner by 4 points. Second place went to Paul Webb who had a little local knowledge to help him to a great score of 34 points, with third place going to Ray Hughes with 33 points. Very well done gents!

Many thanks to regular sponsor Mark Phelan of Phelan Caswell Insurances who laid on a fabulous array of wine hampers for the prize presentation. Our thanks also to The Clontarf Castle for once again looking after us so well in The Indigo Lounge, helping with the set-up & laying on some fabulous finger food. Captain Vincent and Mark did a great job presenting the prizes, ably assisted by Vice Captain Stephen Mooney. Captain also thanked Michael Brennan for his long time sponsorship of the Nearest-the-Pin competition. Mick supplied a magnificent lamp, which was won by Paul O’Halloran this time around. Luttrellstown

Up next is a return to the beautiful Luttrellstown Golf Club for the Mick Slein & National Lighting sponsored outing on Friday 29 July 2022 for the society Stroke-play Championship.. Tee times from 10.10am. Cost to members on sign-on night will be €55.00, including two’s entry and charity donation. Sign-on night will be in THE INDIGO LOUNGE on THURS 21 July at 8.00pm

Please remember, to ensure speed of play when playing stroke-play – if in doubt, play a provisional ball – nobody wants that lonely walk back for a reload! This will help ensure you keep up with the group in front.

Notwithstanding that, please always take the time to rake bunkers as you exit. Leaving the bunker in a condition that you would like to find it yourself is, quite simply, showing respect to your fellow golfers and to the club and members where we are playing.
