Away Trip to Cambrills Gallery

Only a little over an hour from Dublin what a hidden gem Concra Wood proved to be. Bearing in mind that we played the course in, what felt like a bad winters day. Thankfully the precipitation (apparently it’s not as wetting as rain and sounds nice!) forecast by Met Eireann and Gay Pollards iPhone failed to materialise, making the conditions somewhat more palatable. For members who have yet to play the course, it ranks in my opinion, as one of the best courses, with unrivalled scenery and views, that we have ever played. Even golfers having a bad day at the office, as a lot of us did, arrived back at the club house in good spirits having enjoyed a very pleasant buggy ride around this wonderful course.
Essential items when playing this course; a buggy, tons of golf balls and lots of time to enjoy the superb views from the clubhouse bar. Check out the photo gallery for the latest master pieces from Philip McGowan. Our thanks to Sean McKeon and MKN Property Group for sponsoring the excellent prizes.
The tough conditions were reflected in the scoring and it is quite a while since we witnessed 31 points winning an outing. The victor on the day, Andy Flynn emerged two points clear of Derek Erskine and Fraser Mc Mullan who claimed second and third place.
Philip McGowan, in between taking photos, managed to win Class 1 with 27 points. New member Brian O’Callaghan won his first prize with the society, Class 2 with 27 points. The Ward brothers are making a habit of gracing the podium and on this occasion it was Stephens turn when he won Class 3 with a score of 24 points. The Front 9 went to Jim Stanley with a stunning 16 points. John Gaffney recorded 15 points probably a career low to win the back nine. John Brady won the magnificent wine glasses in the Nearest the pin competition. Congratulations to all of the aforementioned who were richly deserving of their prizes.
On a final sad note. Our sincere condolences to the family of Michael English past Captain and President of St. Annes Golf Club and a long-time member of the society who passed away after a short illness on Wednesday last. At the removal service in Saint Gabriels Church I listened as the priest addressed the large gathering of Michaels family and friends. He described him as a gentleman and to me that epitomised Michael in every way. May he rest in peace.
Yours in Golf,
Michael Brennan
Honorary Secretary
